How reliable is BBC Weather? ›

In a composite measure of accuracy, the Weather Channel and Weather Underground came top, AccuWeather fifth, MeteoGroup (the BBC's new provider) sixth and the BBC ninth (based on Met Office forecasts). On the correct prediction of precipitation, MeteoGroup came fourth overall and the BBC 10th of the 12.

Over the past 12 months 92% of our three hourly temperature forecasts have been accurate to within ± 2 °C on the current day. These graphs are only available for the current day and are not archived.

As part of the tender assessment process, the accuracy of trial forecasts provided by different companies tendering for the contract were assessed. During this process the Met Office was found to be the most accurate of the companies that tendered for the contract.

The UK is often associated with rain, but this is because the weather can be unpredictable. The rain doesn't come all in one season – it can come at any time of year, and on any day. You might experience beautiful sunshine, blustering winds and drizzling rain – all in one afternoon.

The Short Answer: A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

The higher temperatures last longer in the west, especially behind the mountains. This is when Porthmadog (and down the coast in Llanbedr where the Met Office has a weather station) can often be the warmest and sunniest place in the UK.

The pattern of rainfall is similar at each, with the months October to January the wettest and the late spring and early summer months the driest.
