Chapter 3 Three - Shadows Of The Crescent Moon - Ise Meetz (2024)

The weeks that followed Asher's ascension to Alpha were a whirlwind of change and upheaval. Elara watched as he assumed his new role with a fierce determination, his every decision carrying the weight of their pack's future.

Yet, despite her unwavering faith in him, a sense of unease began to creep into Elara's heart. There were moments when she caught Asher's gaze lingering on her, a strange mix of emotions flickering across his face – longing, resentment, and something darker that she couldn't quite place.

"Elara, a word?" Asher's gruff voice broke through her thoughts one evening as she stood on the outskirts of their camp, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of crimson and gold.

She turned to face him, her heart fluttering at his proximity. "Of course, Alpha."

Asher's jaw tightened at the formal address, his eyes boring into hers with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "You don't need to call me that when we're alone," he murmured, taking a step closer.

Elara swallowed hard, her pulse quickening. "What is it, Asher?"

He paused, seeming to struggle with his words. "I... I need to know if you have any regrets."

Elara frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Regrets? About what?"

"About giving up your claim to be Luna," Asher pressed, his voice edged with a hint of something darker. "About sacrificing your dreams for the good of the pack."

Elara met his gaze steadily, her resolve unwavering. "I have no regrets, Asher. My choice was made out of love – for you, and for our pack. I would do it again in a heartbeat."

Asher's expression shifted, a muscle twitching in his jaw. For a moment, Elara thought she saw a flicker of something akin to disgust in his eyes, but it was gone before she could be certain.

"Of course," he said, his tone clipped. "I should have known you'd say that."

Before Elara could respond, Asher turned on his heel and stalked away, leaving her standing alone in the fading light, her heart a tumultuous storm of confusion and doubt.

Over the next few days, Asher grew increasingly distant, his decisions as Alpha taking on a harsher, more authoritative tone. Elara found herself on the receiving end of his cold indifference, her once-cherished role in the pack diminishing with each passing day.

"Elara, have you noticed anything... off about Asher lately?" Seraphina Thornwood asked one night as they sat together by the dying embers of the campfire.

Elara sighed, her heart heavy with a burden she couldn't quite put into words. "I'm not sure, Sera. He's been different ever since becoming Alpha – more distant, more... intense."

Seraphina's brow furrowed. "I've noticed it too. It's almost as if he resents you for giving up your claim to be Luna."

Elara shook her head, her ebony locks swaying with the motion. "That can't be it. Asher knows I did it for the good of the pack – for him."

But even as the words left her lips, a tendril of doubt took root in her heart. What if Seraphina was right? What if Asher harbored resentment towards her, a bitterness that threatened to unravel the very fabric of their pack?

The thought sent a chill down Elara's spine, and she found herself clutching Seraphina's hand, seeking comfort in the unwavering loyalty of her dearest friend.

Little did she know, the darkness that had taken root in Asher's heart was only the beginning – a harbinger of betrayal that would shake the foundations of everything she held dear.

The days bled into weeks, and Elara found herself increasingly isolated from Asher and the inner workings of the pack. His indifference towards her was palpable, a chasm growing wider with each passing moment.

It was during one of her solitary walks through the forest that Elara stumbled upon a sight that would shatter her world forever.

She had ventured deeper into the trees than usual, drawn by the siren call of solitude. The dense foliage muffled her footsteps, the only sound the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze.

Then, she heard voices – hushed and urgent – drifting through the trees ahead. Instinctively, Elara slowed her pace, her hackles rising as she strained to make out the words.

"...can't let her live," a familiar voice growled, sending ice through Elara's veins. "She's a threat to everything we've built."

Asher.

Elara's heart thundered in her chest as she crept closer, peering through the underbrush. There, in a small clearing, stood Asher and Aiden Storm, their heads bowed together in conspiratorial whispers.

"But Alpha," Aiden protested, his voice laced with unease. "Elara is one of us. She sacrificed everything for the good of the pack."

Asher's lip curled in a snarl. "Her 'sacrifice' was a ploy, a desperate attempt to hold onto power. If she remains among us, she'll only breed dissent and doubt."

Elara's breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling from Asher's words. A ploy? How could he think such a thing?

"What would you have me do, Alpha?" Aiden asked, his tone resigned.

Asher's eyes narrowed, glinting with a cold, ruthless determination. "Eliminate her. Make it look like an accident, but ensure she is no longer a threat to my rule."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis as Elara stumbled back, her legs suddenly weak. Asher, the wolf she had loved with every fiber of her being, the one she had sacrificed her dreams for, was plotting her demise.

Tears stung her eyes as she turned and fled, her footsteps silent against the forest floor. She ran until her lungs burned and her legs trembled, finally collapsing against the gnarled trunk of an ancient oak.

Sobs wracked her body as the bitter taste of betrayal coated her tongue. How could he? After everything they had been through, after all she had given up for him, Asher had turned against her in the cruelest way imaginable.

As the moon rose high above the trees, Elara found herself adrift in a sea of despair and heartbreak. The wolf she had loved was gone, replaced by a twisted shell of ambition and greed.
