Tell us about the upcoming movie Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods? Do we leave right off from the first movie or has some time passed?

Grace: Well, at the end of the first Shazam, you’ve got the whole Shazam family gaining superpowers, so in this next installment, you kind of see that they’ve had powers, they’ve been acting as heroes in the city, but it does follow shortly after the first one.

The daughters of Atlas are after Billy and his foster siblings magic. Why are these vengeful gods so adamant to take these powers back? Is it because they feel they’re not worthy?

Grace: Oh, yes. You’ve got the daughters of Atlas who come from immense history and legacy, and then you’ve got these kids in Philadelphia with godlike powers. Naturally, the daughters of Atlas feel that this is wrong, ; they are in the wrong hands.

What’s Mary’s role in the film? Each of the foster siblings brings a different energy, what do you believe is her strength as a person?

Grace: Well, they call Mary the brains, but she also is the heart. A lot of the time, you know, she’s giving Billy a good old heart-to-heart, leading him to more emotional growth and maturity. She definitely is the therapist of the group.

What do you believe is the most relatable thing about Mary?

Grace: I am very similar to Mary in that I observe the people around me and Mary definitely is from behind her massive organic chemistry book. Despite her focus studying, she is observing the family, the family dynamics and everyone’s emotional well being. And she really cares for each person in the family to be operating at their best and if something’s a little bit off, you know, she’ll sit and have that heart-to-heart to try to get– especially Billy, I think she’s got a massive soft spot for Billy and she knows what it’s like to be a new member in a foster family. And definitely in this one, Billy’s adapted to being in the family, but, you know, he’s never been in a stable home. This is the first time we’re seeing him in a stable home with stable love and how he responds to that. Mary is kind there for him to help him continue to settle in.

Is it true that you are the only cast member to play both the regular and superhero version of yourself?

Grace: This is true. Yes. It’s crazy.

How was that determined?

Grace: Yeah, I mean, on the first one, they were weighing on whether or not I should play both because, in the first one, I was in my early 20s and they thought, ‘well, maybe Grace can do both?’ But I look so young, so by the time we got to this one, they went, ‘okay, I think it’s time. I think she can pull double duty.’ And a big part of it is that I hardly wear any makeup when I’m human and then when I get superfied, you know, I get a little glammed up. And obviously the superhero suit makes a big impact on me being perceived as a superhero. But what was really wild was, I worked the most days out of anyone. Everyone was kind of baffled and confused about it, but because I was with the adult cast when the adult cast was on set, and I also played the human form when the adults were gone and the kids came to set. I was still on set with the kids. So, I was just kind of there the whole time.

If you were suddenly given superpowers, what powers would you choose to have?

Grace: I knew this question was coming. I knew it. And I always don’t know because there’s just– I’m an indecisive person already and I probably would give a different answer depending on when this question is asked. For now, we’ll go with healing. I think regenerative, like restorative powers are really cool. Like if my arm got sliced off, I could grow it back. Or if someone was, you know, if their arm got sliced off. I could grow it back. I don’t know why arm is specifically what I’m going for, but I think that’d be really cool. Like a starfish.

Which superhero in the DC universe is your all time favorite?

Grace: Man I mean, I have a soft spot for Hawkgirl from the animated Justice League. Because I love that she’s in therapy at one point and I don’t know, I thought that was such a cool thing to see, a superhero in therapy, like working through trauma. And she’s also just super, super tough, super cool. But, I mean, I love Batman. I love Batman so much. If I get my blood drawn, and I’m nervous, I tell myself I’m Batman to get through it.

Mary and the rest of the foster kids had their worlds turned upside down after they acquired their powers and this movie will be a battle to keep them, and to save the world. Do you think there’s any part of the kids that wish they didn’t have these powers or the weight of the world on their shoulders?

Grace: Um, I would say, as a whole– I mean, especially with Freddy, right? He loves superheroes and this is just such a dream come true to have superpowers, and actually be and be the thing that you admire. For Mary, she is the only one, being older, who’s actually juggling the reality of being an adult and contributing to society and having a job. I would say she doesn’t quite respond to having superpowers the same as a kid would because she is still really focused on how she contributes to society as just a human being. I find it really interesting that Mary has that self awareness that regardless of how powerful she is or that she’s a superhero, she still has to pull her own weight in this world and contribute to society and have a job.

If she did lose her powers, do you think she would still want to help save the world?

Grace: That’s a good question because she is so focused on Organic Chemistry, so I think, to a degree, she would save the world in some way and probably get some sort of Nobel Peace Prize. She’s so brilliant, but I think Mary’s biggest impact is within her home and she is the glue, if you will, within her family and the inner workings there. So, I think to answer your question she’s kind of working behind the scenes a lot of the time and in a sense contributing to saving the world by caring for what she has access to: her home and her family.

Without spoiling anything, how is Shazam 2 going to top the first one? Why should people head to the theaters and see it?

Grace: This movie has so much action, new mythological characters, new added characters with the daughters of Atlas. It is so detailed and such a magical world to dive into. I had a hard time talking about it, when we would do behind the scenes interviews, talking about it because it is rich. This movie is so rich. It’s exactly what you want when you go to the theaters to watch a superhero movie. You just get sucked into this magical wild world. And you get to see a much deeper layer with all of the characters. Since the first one established Billy and his family, we now actually get to go on an adventure with this one. So you just have to see it in theaters. It’s insane.

I cannot wait to see this! Thank you so much for chatting with me. I love the conversation. I loved the first movie and I know I’ll love the second one.

Grace: It’s so good. I feel like I’m supposed to say that because I’m in it, but genuinely, when I saw it, I didn’t have a moment where I was taken out. Like I felt like I was absolutely engrossed in the world the whole time, which I don’t feel that way in a lot of movies these days, you know? It’s hard to get that wonder you felt as a child when you would watch like a Steven Spielberg movie or, you know, Jurassic Park, but with this one I was like, wow, I feel like a kid again at the movies and I can’t look away and I care about these characters and what is happening.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods isslated for theatrical release on March 17, 2023.
