Thomasville man arrested for Winston-Salem hotel shooting
YOUR LOCATION. NEW AT TEN. IT’S BEEN EXACTLY ONE MONTH SINCE A WINSTON-SALEM MAN WENT MISSING, AND TONIGHT FRIENDS AND FAMILY GATHERED FOR A VIGIL AND A CALL TO ACTION. THOMAS TK BURTON WAS LAST SEEN IN RANDOLPH COUNTY ON JULY 29TH. LOVED ONES RALLIED AT HARMON PARK IN KERNERSVILLE. THEY’RE SUPPORTING EACH OTHER AND HOLDING OUT HOPE THAT SOMEONE WILL COME FORWARD WITH ANSWERS. TONIGHT WE HEARD FROM TK’S DEVASTATED SISTER AND MOTHER. THAT’S MY BROTHER. THAT’S SOMEBODY JUST TO COME FORWARD AND TELL THE TRUTH SO WE CAN SEE HIS SMILE AGAIN. I CAN’T SEE HIM GOING ANYWHERE BY HIMSELF LIKE THIS. NOT T.K. NOT JUST BY HIMSELF. NOBODY KNOWS WHERE HE AT. HE’S THE TYPE OF PERSON. HE WOULDN’T LET IT GO THIS FAR. HE WOULDN’T LET IT GO A DAY WITHOUT SAYING I’M HERE. TONIGHT’S VIGIL WAS ORGANIZED BY HOPE DEALERS OUTREACH. WHO IS URGING PEOPLE WHO KNOW SOMETHING TO SAY SOMETHING TO HELP BRING T.K. HOME. A WINSTON-SALEM TEACHER ACCUSED OF HAVING AN INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP WITH A STUDENT. 33 YEAR OLD KEVIN CAMPBELL WAS ARRESTED TODAY. HE WAS A TEACHER AT CALVARY DAY SCHOOL AND IS NOW CHARGED WITH TWO FELONY COUNTS OF INDECENT LIBERTIES WITH A STUDENT. WINSTON-SALEM POLICE SAY OFFICERS BECAME AWARE OF THE INCIDENT BACK IN MAY, AND IT TOOK THEM THE LAST FEW MONTHS TO GATHER EVIDENCE. CAMPBELL WAS GIVEN A $150,000 BOND. IN A STATEMENT, CALVARY DAY SCHOOL SAYS CAMPBELL WAS TERMINATED ON JUNE THIRD AND THAT THE SCHOOL IS, QUOTE, FULLY COOPERATING WITH THE APPROPRIATE AUTHORITIES AND IN HIGH POINT. A FORMER CHURCH WORKER IS ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING SEVERAL TEENAGERS. 12 INVESTIGATES LEARNED TODAY THAT JAMES ROBERT MURPHY WAS A MINISTER AT OAK VIEW BAPTIST CHURCH. SARAH SOWERS REPORTS. JAMES ROBERT MURPHY WAS ARRESTED THURSDAY MORNING, BUT THE SAFETY DIRECTOR OF OAK VIEW BAPTIST CHURCH SAYS THE ALLEGATIONS CAME TO LIGHT EARLIER THIS YEAR. HE SAYS THE CHURCH WAS INFORMED ABOUT CLAIMS IN JANUARY. MURPHY WAS SUSPENDED AND ONE WEEK LATER MURPHY RESIGNED. ANY KIND OF INCIDENT INVOLVING ANY OF OUR MEMBERS, ESPECIALLY OUR YOUTH, IS GOING TO BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY. THE 44 YEAR OLD FACES 30 COUNTS OF SEXUAL BATTERY. AN ARREST WARRANT INDICATES THAT HE TOLD VICTIMS TO TAKE OFF THEIR CLOTHES AND EXPOSED HIMSELF. THE WARRANT INDICATES THIS HAPPENED LAST YEAR, DURING THE TIME IN WHICH MURPHY WAS WORKING FOR THE CHURCH. MARTIN SAYS HE DIDN’T KNOW OF ANY ALLEGATIONS UNTIL FAMILY MEMBERS CAME FORWARD. HE SAYS EVERYONE WHO WORKS WITH THE CHURCH ARE REQUIRED TO PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK. A NEW YOUTH MINISTER HAS BEEN INSTALLED TO SUPPORT THE YOUTH AND THE VICTIMS. WE’VE REGAINED THE TRUST OF OUR OF OUR YOUTH, PARENTS AS WELL AS THE YOUTH, AND WE’LL CONTINUE TO BUILD ON THAT TRUST GOING FORWARD. THAT WAS SARAH SOWERS REPORTING. MARTIN AND POLICE HAVE NOT YET COMMENTED ON WHERE THE ALLEGED ASSAULTS MAY HAVE HAPPENED. MURPHY’S BOND WAS SET AT $100,000. NEW TONIGHT THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA IS OFFERING A REWARD IN A 16 YEAR OLD MISSING PERSONS CASE OUT OF HIGH POINT. 32 YEAR OLD VENUS ROSE WAS LAST SEEN ON MAY 19TH OF 2008, BUT WAS NOT REPORTED MISSING UNTIL SEVEN MONTHS LATER. AUTHORITIES SAY INVESTIGATORS RECEIVED INFORMATION THREE YEARS AGO SUGGESTING SHE HAD BEEN KILLED. THE STATE IS OFFERING UP TO $25,000 FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AN ARREST AND CONVICTION IN THE CASE. WE’RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT A SMALL PLANE THAT MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A GREENSBORO INTERSTATE LAST NIGHT. POLICE SAY AFTER THAT LANDING, THE PILOT MOVED THE AIRCRAFT TO THE SHOULDER OF I-840, WHERE A PASSENGER THEN GOT OUT. THAT’S WHEN A CAR SWERVED AND HIT THAT PASSENGER AND THE RIGHT WING OF THE PLANE. THE PASSENGER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR MINOR INJURIES AND HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED. A LOCAL FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR, WE SPOKE WITH TODAY SAYS A LANDING LIKE THIS ONE IS RARE. EMERGENCY TRAINING IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS WE TEACH PEOPLE. MANIPULATING FLIGHT CONTROLS AND FLYING AN AIRPLANE TAKES PRACTICE FOR SURE, BUT THE REAL TRAINING IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS DON’T GO ACCORDING TO PLAN. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS GOOD JOB, PILOT. THE GREENSBORO TRAFFIC SAFETY UNIT IS NOW INVESTIGATING THE VEHICLE CRASH, AND THE FAA IS INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE PLANE’S ENGINE FAILURE. A WAVE OF COVID CASES CONTINUING TO SPREAD ACROSS THE NATION, INCLUDING HERE IN THE PIEDMONT TRIAD. LOCAL DOCTORS SAY, ACCORDING TO WASTEWATER NUMBERS, WE ARE SEEING JUST ABOUT AS MUCH COVID NOW AS WE DID LAST JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. THE GOOD NEWS IS, CASES ARE NOT NEARLY AS SEVERE. THE COVID FLIRT VARIANT THAT WE’RE DEALING WITH NOW ARE MORE INFECTIOUS. JUST LESS LIKELY TO CAUSE SEVERE DISEASE. EVEN THOUGH WE’RE SEEING A LOT OF CASES AND OUR WASTEWATER NUMBERS REFLECT THAT. WE’RE NOT SEEING A LOT OF HOSPITALIZATIONS IN FACT, MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE COVID IN THE HOSPITAL ARE ACTUALLY IN THE HOSPITAL FOR SOME OTHER REASONS. AND JUST HAPPENED TO TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID BECAUSE THEY HAVE A STUFFY NOSE. COVID BOOSTERS ARE NOW AVAILABLE, AND DOCTOR UL RECOMMENDS WAITING UNTIL OCTOBER TO GET THE SHOT SO YOU ARE PROTECTED THROUGH THE WINTER.
