Description

Description and Features

Forget boring math lessons and dreaded drill sheets. This fun, colorful 352-page book uses engaging lessons with easy-to-follow explanations, examples, and charts to make first grade mathematical concepts easy to understand. It can be used as a textbook or a comprehensive workbook with your textbook to teach the math skills and concepts that students are expected to know in first grade—and several concepts normally taught in second grade. This book emphasizes problem-solving and computation to build for success in higher-level math and math assessments.

Every lesson is followed with a variety of fun, colorful activities to ensure concept mastery. The lessons and activities spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts, but also challenging them to continue building their problem-solving skills. This book teaches more than mathematical concepts; it teaches mathematical reasoning, so students learn to devise different strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems. It is written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

I really love your Mathematical Reasoning books

I really love your Mathematical Reasoning books. My son is behind in math and we are using them to get him up to grade level. They are very comprehensive but not overwhelming and very easy to use. I use them with my daughter as well. We've tried other math curriculum but this is the best we have used by far.

I like it, but needs wide width writing lines

I was attracted to the activities in the book, and I am pleased with them. My son loves the logic problems, and doing the dot to dot activities in conjunction with the math makes the activity more interesting. I like the colored pictures and progression of topics. At the same time, it would be good to include actual wide width writing lines for students who are still working on their printing of numbers so that their numbers and words are not all over the place.

I used the Mathematical Reasoning® books for all four of my children starting at age three. These books are practical and easy to use. The children easily grasped object-to-number ratio, number recognition, addition, subtraction and even algebraic concepts at a very young age. I highly recommend Mathematical Reasoning®!

We have truly enjoyed using this book. We started out by just using it once a week but my daughter begged for more! How can I turn down a child begging for Math!?! We are now using it daily and I can see the improvement in her math.

Mathematical Reasoning™ Level B (2024)

FAQs

Is mathematical reasoning hard? ›

Learning to use and apply mathematical reasoning to problems takes more time and exploration than typically given in the classroom. It also requires children to really think and wrestle with concepts, which may cause some discomfort at first, especially if they are used to figuring out answers quickly.

What does mathematical reasoning look like? ›

Simply put, mathematical reasoning is the process of quantifying generic information into data, and then using deductive reasoning to extrapolate the results you are after. That may not seem like it is “simply put”, but let's see an example. 1 : How much would it cost to build a patio?

What is critical thinking in math? ›

What is critical thinking in mathematics? When students think critically in mathematics, they make reasoned decisions or judgments about what to do and think. In other words, students consider the criteria or grounds for a thoughtful decision and do not simply guess or apply a rule without assessing its relevance.

What is the hardest level of math? ›

1. Real Analysis: This course is sometimes referred to as the most difficult undergraduate math course because it delves deep into the theoretical foundations of calculus. It relies heavily on rigorous proofs and demands a high level of abstract thinking.

Why is reasoning so tough? ›

Decades of cognitive psychology research have demonstrated that reasoning and decision making are often influenced by strong tendencies for people to reply quickly, use the most available information, and make unwitting assumptions and observations aligned with beliefs and experience.

What is a implies B in math reasoning? ›

These statements are actually two if and then statements Most mathematical statements you will come across in first year courses will have the form "If A, then B" or "A implies B". This suggests that the conditions that create "A" are the assumptions we form, while the conditions that create "B" are the conclusion.

What are the three types of mathematical reasoning? ›

As discussed in this section, reasoning techniques are categorized in three major sections. An understanding of Inductive, Abductive and Deductive reasoning will help you solve any reasoning question.

What is the basic of mathematical reasoning? ›

According to mathematical reasoning, if we encounter an if-then statement i.e. 'if a then b', then by proving that a is true, b can be proved to be true or if we prove that b is false, then a is also false.

Is mathematical reasoning a skill? ›

Mathematical reasoning skill is an ability that must be possessed by each student because it involves the ability to think logically and systematically.

Does math exercise the brain? ›

Mathematical thinking is like exercise for your brain that helps strengthen and develop the brain. Similar to how your body requires exercise and muscles are strained in order to become stronger, your brain requires mental exercise in order to strengthen itself and maintain mental skills and memory at their best.

Does math require logic? ›

Logic is simply a way of combining existing facts to produce new facts. Mathematics is a set of specific formal applications of logic, with each branch of mathematics starting with a different set of initial facts.

What is the hardest skill in math? ›

The most difficult math type is typically abstract mathematics. Abstract mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with abstract concepts, such as sets, groups, and rings. Abstract mathematics is very challenging because it requires students to think abstractly and reason logically.

Which is the hardest math test? ›

Tulsa Okla. — Oral Roberts University's (ORU) undergrad math students competed in the 82nd William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, known as the most complex math test in the world.

Why is numerical reasoning so hard? ›

The complexity of data, amount of data and time constraints are the factors affecting the level of difficulty of a numerical reasoning test.
