Welcome to the guide for Mission 04 - V, a main mission in Devil May Cry 5. This is the first mission you'll play as V, so it acts as a sort of tutorial level. Read on for helpful tips, collectible locations, Secret Missions, boss strategy, and more.

Around the same time that Nero approached and encountered Artemis, V split off to find the demonic tree on his own.

This is your first time playing as V, and though luckily your Red Orbs and Vitality carry over from Nero, you'll have to purchase Skills for him separately (but not just yet.)

When you start the mission, you'll be treated to a tutorial. V's body is weaker than Nero and Dante's, so he uses "pet" demons to fight for him.

Think of Shadow as V's melee weapon assigned to Y/X, and Griffon as his long-ranged weapon assigned to X/Square. Like with Nero, the attacks change depending on whether you're targeting an enemy and which directional input you use. Pay attention to the tutorial here to get the hang of it.

After defeating the tutorial baddies, continue down the only path you have. Eventually you'll come to some metal spiral stairs. Jump to the right of them to get some Red Orbs.

Instead of continuing through the doorway below, hop up to where the Green Orbs are above it, then to the very top to the right of the metal platform. Stand still on top of the rubble here for a second - a Red Orb Cache will appear.

Right through the doorway, you'll encounter another fight. Here, you'll learn by locking onto a defeated enemy with RB/RT, you can press B/Circle to teleport and finish them off in one fell swoop.

After defeating them, continue forward.

Do not jump down!

Instead, jump over this small wall to the Blood Clot ahead, and destroy it. There's a large Red Orb Cache right behind it.

Now, you can jump down where the red orbs are floating down to the train tracks - but look into the doorway across from it first.

There are enemies below, and approaching them will trigger a small cutscene. V goes into Devil Trigger mode, where he summons a huge demon - Nightmare.

It will immediately unleash a large attack and down multiple enemies. Take advantage and finish them off by holding RB/RT and pressing B/Circle to finish them one by one.

After the fight, look toward the colorful shipping containers and climb them - as high as you can.

There's a Gold Orb here above the shipping containers behind a tree.

After collecting the Red Orbs around the containers, continue forward down the destroyed train tracks. You'll see a tutorial pop up about Stalemate - when V's demons take too much damage, they'll stop moving. Stand next to them to improve their recovery rate.

Now destroy the Blood Clot in front of you. The bridge will collapse, but Griffon will save V and carry him across. You drop down with a Gold Orb right behind you, so pick it up before you continue.

Up ahead, collect the Nidhogg Hatchling to the left - but be prepared, some demonic roots will spawn.

Collecting this Nidhogg Hatchling is Step 1 of many to activating Secret Mission 03. Watch the video below for full instructions!

Destroy them and head inside. Make sure to pick up the Purple Orb Fragment just inside here.

You'll progress uninhibited for a while. When you get to the other side of the building, your path will be blocked, and another tutorial will pop up about V.

Press LT/L2 + Y/Triangle to strengthen Shadow, or X/Square to strengthen Griffon, and have them attack autonomously for a time by using a stock of the Devil Trigger Gauge.

Activate Nightmare during this battle to accomplish Step 2 to unlocking Secret Mission 03.

Use this for the fight to come. After defeating the first wave, you'll learn to read (hah) with RT/R2. This will fill the DT Gauge. You can read while simultaneously controlling Shadow and Griffon - but V will move incredibly slowly.

Go to the back alley behind the wall Nightmare broke during this fight to find a second Nidhogg Hatchling. Step 3 to unlocking Secret Mission 03.

Continue forward. Use Griffon's ranged attack to shoot the red orb containers hanging from above - you'll be able to hit them with some trial and error.

Just beyond here, you'll encounter more enemies. After defeating them, simply keep going - but keep your eye out to your left.

You'll see a receptacle for the Nidhogg Hatchling you picked up earlier, and find a Blue Orb Fragment behind it.

With the second Nidhogg Hatchling in hand, you can open an entrance to a building. Climb to the top and look outside the broken wall to activate Secret Mission 03.

After the "side-quest" is complete, continue. Some demonic roots will appear to fight - defeat them, and keep going. Eventually you'll make it to a more open area, where a handful of strong enemies will emerge and block you in.

We've had luck strengthening Shadow and Griffon while reading to keep our DT Gauge up.

After defeating them, keep going - but look on your left until you see a red phone booth. Call Nico - you can now customize V for the impending Boss Fight!

Boss Fight: Parasitic Fiend Nidhogg

Before heading into the Boss Fight ahead, definitely buy some skills for V. We recommend, in this order:

  • Shadow - Breakthrough (1200)
  • Griffon - Flank Attack (7500)
  • Griffon - Blockade 2 (2500)
  • Shadow - Shadow Combo B (1200)
  • Abilities - Quickplay (4500) - Not useful for battle, but during missions to travel faster.

At the start of this battle, go ahead and use your Devil Trigger gauge to strengthen Shadow and Griffon (LT/L2+Y/Triangle and LT/L2+X/Square). Make sure to replenish the DT by reading with RT/R2 while V's demons attack on their own while strengthened.

You'll want to keep your distance, while constantly laying down attacks with both of V's demons. Take this opportunity to watch Nidhogg to get a handle on its movements.

Griffon's Blockade - performed by holding, then releasing, the X/Square button, is especially useful here. Lay that down often when multiple roots are out to hit them at the same time. Shadow's Arbiter, performed by pressing RB/RT + LS back + Y/Triangle, and holding Y/Triangle to keep Shadow in the air, is also useful here.

If you're running low on health, there are some Green Orbs to the right of the enemy on the floor.

When a root goes down, you'll have to finish it with V's cane. Either approach it and press B/Circle or hold RB/RT+B to teleport next to it.

These roots will occasionally aim for V, as well. Keep moving - you'll be able to tell when they're aiming at you.

After dealing enough damage to them, the main body of the Nidhogg will appear.

This one will aim almost exclusively for V, and he's much more difficult to dodge. In a pinch, use Switchback - RB/RT + LS back + A/X - to hitch a ride with Griffon and move backwards.

Eventually, the roots will spit projectiles at V as well - a little more unpredictable than the other close-ranged attacks. Keep moving and dodging, and never stopp attacking with V's demons, and you'll be able to take down Nidhogg.

How many chapters are there in Devil May Cry 5? ›

Over the course of the game's twenty chapters, the relationship among the three men is illuminated, but I suspect that more people look to Devil May Cry for cosplay ideas than for its story line.

What can you do in Devil May Cry 5? ›

Gameplay. The gameplay features the return of Dante and Nero as playable characters, along with a new character, named V. The gameplay is similar to that of the other titles in the Devil May Cry series, focusing on fast-paced "stylish action"; the player fights off hordes of demons with a variety of attacks and weapons ...

Is V actually Vergil? ›

V is one of the main protagonists and the third playable character introduced in Devil May Cry 5. A human with demonic ties, V presents himself as Dante's new client to put him on the trail of Urizen and takes Nero as backup insurance. It's revealed later that V is, in fact, the human half of Vergil.

Who is stronger, Dante or Vergil? ›

Of course, Dante wins in the end (with the exception of Devil May Cry 5,) but that's mostly because of Dante's own abilities and not Vergil's lack of strength. When it comes to power, Vergil can overpower Dante reliably. Keep in mind that Vergil nearly killed Dante during their first fight in DMC1.

Is Devil May Cry 5 repetitive? ›

Controls are awfully complicated, so if you're not used to playing fighting games, you will just mash through everything...and still succeed! There are so many golden orbs, even if you are that bad, the game gives you a thousand chances to try again. The whole game feels repetitive and boring.

Is Devil May Cry 5 inappropriate? ›

I would rate this game for violence, blood, and infrequent use of strong language. This game honestly should have a teen rating and not a mature rating. It is equivalent to a pg-13 movie, and by giving it a mature rating it is like saying that this game is a r rated movie, and it is nowhere even close to that.

Is Devil May Cry 5 a difficult game? ›

Devil May Cry 5

Luckily, the fifth and latest entry in the series is much more difficult than Devil May Cry 2, but it's still not too hard of an experience, so long as players make full use of all the tools and abilities at their disposal.

Why is DMC 5 so cool? ›

The main thing about this game above all else is the incredibly deep combat system. You will not find a great story here or environments that you can explore, this is all about non stop action. It's a deeply satisfying and sufficiently challenging combat that is at the heart of it all.

Was DMC 5 a success? ›

According to Capcom, the latest entry in its demon-slaying hack-and-slash action series has now surpassed 6 million copies sold. For a bit of context, DMC 5 hit 5 million copies sold back in April this year, meaning a million more copies have been sold in just the last six months.

Is there a secret ending in Devil May Cry 5? ›

The player will get another shot at Urizen later on, but to unlock the secret ending they'll have to beat him in the prologue. Unfortunately the player is still vastly underequipped for the job, so it's advisable to beat the game at least once and come back once they've buffed up a bit.
