Athletics: ‘Intentional choice’ to finish last, says Crittenden
This is very interesting. Freddie Crittenden of the United States, who finished last in his 110m hurdles heat a little earlier this morning, has told NBC it was a deliberate choice of his.
He said he felt a tweak during his warm-up this morning and would instead target progressing through Tuesday’s repechage.
💬 “It was an intentional choice.
“Everyone gets through to the repechage. So I decided to just, not make an emotional choice, make a smart choice, give my body time to recover a little bit from being aggravated, lean on my medical doctors, lean on God, and just wait for the repechage round, come out here and try to kill it in the repechage round.”
Athletics: Agony for Hansle Parchment
Xu Zhuoyi wins the next heat of the men’s 110m hurdles qualifying, at 13.40, edging out the Bahamas’ Antoine Andrews and the United States’ Daniel Roberts, who both finished at 13.43. They all qualified for the semis.
Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment, ranked third in the world coming into the event, had the same time, at 13.43, but was judged fifth in a multi-racer photo finish.
Hockey: India through to men's semi-final
Wow. Astonishing scenes in the hockey.
India played 42 minutes a man down after the red card. For a few minutes they were down to 9 men. Yet they hung on for a 1-1 draw and won the penalty shootout 4-2.
What a performance from the Indians. Great Britain will be gutted.
Athletics: Freddie Crittenden finishes last in heats
Not at all sure what just happened here with U.S. sprinter Freddie Crittenden, ranked fourth in the world in the men’s 110M hurdles, and a definite threat to medal here at the Olympics.
He pulled up just seconds after the starting gun, slowed to almost a jog after the first hurdle, and finished last in his heat. A brutal race for Crittenden, who finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships, missing the podium by 0.07 seconds.
Boxing: Lin Yu-ting ‘shuts down social media platforms’
Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting won earlier today to reach the semifinals of the women’s featherweight division at the Paris Olympics, which guarantees her a medal.
Lin, who is one of two women’s boxers to find themselves at the center of a gender eligibility row at these Games, beat Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva by unanimous decision.
After the fight Staneva made a cross with her fingers and shouted “no, no” as she left the ring. Beforehand, the Bulgarian Boxing Federation said it “strongly opposed” Lin’s participation.
When interviewed after the fight Lin was asked about the support she has received, to which she replied:
💬 “A lot of people cheered me on in Paris and also in my country. I received a lot of supporting messages. I did not read them because I shut down my social media platforms. I am going to take this strength all the way to the end.”
