Is it hard to get into private equity?
Landing a career in private equity is very difficult because there are few jobs on the market in this profession and so it can be very competitive. Coming into private equity with no experience is impossible, so finding an internship or having previous experience in a related field is highly recommended.
For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%. To break into one of the top 10 hedge fund firms, your chance is 1 in 147 or 0.68%.
Private equity offers a more attractive work/life balance but is also potentially even harder to break into. Like investment banking, PE also offers opportunities to move into asset management, hedge funds, venture capital, or other senior roles in finance.
To break into private equity, a strong educational background is essential. Most professionals have degrees in finance, business, or related fields. Relevant experience in areas like investment banking or consulting is highly regarded.
You may be aware of the longstanding question about whether private equity returns have historically outperformed public equity. The simple answer is: yes, by a significant margin.
Private equity owners make money by buying companies they think have value and can be improved. They improve the company or break it up and sell its parts, which can generate even more profits.

but nowhere near as much as in management consulting. While the travel will be less, the work in private equity is very stressful and demanding, so the hours you actually spend working may be more stressful or mentally demanding.
The “all-in” combined salary is approximately $275k to $390k at top PE firms, but this figure can be much lower for smaller-sized funds and exceed $400k for firms with reputations for being the highest-paying (e.g. Apollo Global).
How hard is it to break into private equity wso?
There is no set path to breaking into Private Equity, but there are paths that are much more common. As an undergraduate student you will be facing a significant challenge. Very few PE firms recruit undergraduates and the ones that do are usually extremely selective.
Another major downside is that private equity is a much more saturated market today than in previous decades. There's too much capital chasing too few high-quality companies, which means that returns will almost certainly decrease in the future.
- 1) aim for an analyst position (if you're still in undergrad)
- 2) lots and lots of work (if you're mid-career already)
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
A lot of limited partner private equity firms will hire undergraduates and then put them through the CFA. It's rare for direct investment firms to do the same. However, we also see a lot of junior investment bankers with CFA level one, as it shows both technical knowledge and evidence of commitment.”
Examples of solid answers to the “why private equity” question: You want to work with companies over the long-term instead of just on a single deal. You want to get exposed to the operations of companies and understand all aspects rather than just the financial ones (note: “exposed to,” not “control” or “improve”).
Private equity is a core pillar of BlackRock's alternatives platform. BlackRock's Private Equity teams manage USD$41.9 billion in capital commitments across direct, primary, secondary and co-investments.
Private equity funds are illiquid and are risky because of their high use of debt; furthermore, once investors have turned their money over to the fund, they have no say in how it's managed. In compensation for these terms, investors should expect a high rate of return.
Private Equity Associate Salary. $69,000 is the 25th percentile. Salaries below this are outliers. $120,000 is the 75th percentile.
The estimated total pay for a Vice President, Private Equity is $275,065 per year in the United States area, with an average salary of $176,393 per year. What degree is best for private equity?
Private equity firms usually seek someone with a strong sense of numbers. As such, the majors they generally look for include Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Mathematics, or Economics. GPA will, of course, be a factor here.
Compared to other jobs in the financial space, private equity roles can provide a more balanced lifestyle, potential for better pay and more engaging, connected work. Private equity is growing in popularity, and an increasing number of college graduates or financial professionals are looking to break into the space.
As big firms usually prefer to hire candidates with internships at other private equity firms, consulting or investment banking, focusing on smaller firms and jobs in these complementary fields is usually a good way to eventually get a job at a top private equity organization.
Private Equity Career Training
